IVAN MESEK was born 23 March 1971 in Varaždin (Croatia), where he completed his high school education (1989). He entered the Academy of fine arts in Zagreb the same year.
During his studies, he was a part of the International Summer Academy of fine arts in Salzburg (1992 and 1993) in the class of Antonio Dias (1992) and „Fluxus-a practical understanding“ of Dick Higgins (1993).

In 1996 he entered the post-graduate studies „Bildnerisches Gestalten und Therapie“at the Academy of fine arts in Munich, which he completed in 1999 with the thesis „Application of Art Therapy in Art education" (registered by the Croatian University as Master's Thesis in 2001).
From 1999 to 2001 he taught professional vocational subjects at the vocational high school.
From 2002 to 2004 he was the Associate for Culture at the Culture, Science and Sports Department of the City of Varaždin.
In 2004 he was the interim director of the public cultural institution “Gallery Centre Varaždin“.
From 2005 to 2009 he was the Vice Mayor of the City of Varaždin in charge of culture.
From 2010 he is the director of the public cultural institution “Gallery Centre Varaždin“.

Since 2000 he has been the Chairman of the Croatian Artists Society Varaždin, and has organised various artistic events („Days of Croatian Performance“, „Biennale of Fashion Photography“, „From A to B“, „IMPRESSION-EXPRESSION“ (UTISAK-OTISAK), „The Artist in the city“,…)
He is the initiator, the author or co-author of several prominent and awarded projects (the „Magic Box“ promotional film, „Gallery in the Open“ project, etc.).

He is an active multi-media driven artist who practices painting, installations, urban interventions, performance art, graphic design and photography.
He presented more than 20 individual exhibition and was a part of several dozen group exhibition, and projects throughout Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Great Britain and the USA.
